Gesti Ritrovati – Rediscovered acts
Gesti Ritrovati (“rediscovered acts”) is a work group coordinated by qualified archaeologists and specialists in prehistory and protohistory, all of whom share practical experience in excavation and a cultural education both in classical and scientific studies. Gesti Ritrovati undertakes projects in the field of research and consulting not only with public institutions (such as museums, archaeological parks, schools) but also with private bodies (i.e. cultural associations), and in that sense it is working for the popularization of scientific knowledge.
The name Gesti Ritrovati is meant to express the main purpose of the group, which is the attempt to revive ancient strategies and techniques peculiar to ancient cultures.
In specific terms our goal is the reconstruction of the working conditions typical of antiquity, with special attention to the articulation and complexity of the different operational phases emerging from the analysis of the socio-cultural dynamics connected.
According to Gesti Ritrovati, the essential means which should be used in this research is experimental archaeology, as a scientific discipline that bases its own working method on the experimental research principles set out by Galileo. Gesti Ritrovati stresses the popularization of experimental methodology and its techniques, by presenting accounts of experience gathered in the field, together with photographic records. The hand-manufactured articles produced during these experimentations, all of which are carefully photographed and listed in an inventory, are usually employed for exhibitory, educational and/or experimental ends, within the field of functional research. Some of the reproductions are on show or are being used in archaeological parks or museums, according to their value regarding the experimental workshops which produced them. |

Description:
After having received a Master of Art at the Art Institute for Ceramics in Faenza in 1991, I graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of Bologna, degree thesis in History of Handicraft Production and the Culture of Materials. Since then, I have been carrying out superficial reconnaissance and archaeological excavations in Italy, focussing on the Prehistoric and Protohistoric Age.
In 2003 I founded Gesti Ritrovati and I started dealing with experimental archaeology and organising experimental exhibitions in museums and archaeological parks, in co-operation with cultural associations and schools. Since 2006 I have been holding training courses in experimental archaeology at different levels, in particular in archaeological and natural parks. My aim is to train local operators, to raise their awareness and to optimise the maintenance and future use of the experimental places I built. Since 2007, the Department of History and Methods for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage (University of Bologna) has granted its scientific patronage to the activities of Gesti Ritrovati. |
