Āraišu arheoloģiskais muzejparks
Araisi Archaeological Museum Park at the Latvian National History Museum
Early medieval wooden lake fortress - museum, the reconstructed Āraiši lake fortress is in north-western Latvia, not far from the town of Cēsis, on an island in lake Āraiši.
Āraišu Ezerpils (The Āraiši Lake Fortress), the reconstuction of a dwelling from the 9th century AD, is located on a picturesque islet in the Āraiši lake. The reconstruction is based on remains of a well preserved complex of timber buildings uncovered during archaeological excavation (1965 – 1969; 1970 – 1975), and conclusions made in a result of a long term research work on lifestyle and building traditions of ancient inhabitants of Latvia in the Viking Age. On the basis of this reconstruction the open air archaeological museum is being developed. Visitors can also view the Medieval Castle Ruin and a reconstructed Stone and Bronze Age dwellings here. Folklore events, Bees’ Festivals, Viking Days, drama excursions “Verge of Ages in Āraiši” and other events are taking place at this site. |

Description:
I am a Viking Age and Medieval archaeologist. By doing research in Viking Age grave yards I have contributed to a better understanding of Viking Age people in Latvia and the Latgalls in particular. Thus I have been trying to help in calling into life the dream of my husband, e.g. set up the first open air archaeology museum in Latvia. My special field of interest is ancient textiles. |

Description:
My special field of interest is Iron Age lake dwellings in Latvia, a particular type of archaeological sites that I discovered in the 1960-ies. Whole my life I have devoted to excavation, interpretation and reconstruction of the most famous site of this type, Araisi lake fortress. To build up the past picture of the lake fortress at present, my work has been closely related with experimental archaeology and living history. |
